Jafner, m.s. 18 April 1974 Journal 18 April - 9.5 mi. N. Johannesburg, 2 mi. E of Trona Rd. (cont) (a new camp) San Bernardino G. 3200', Calif. Live traps - 49 Perog. long. 5 P. formosus 2 D. merriami Snap - 5 P. long, 2 P. long (tail only) Success: 32% 1100- measured vegetation spacing and height and moved camp into hills (for future analysis) directly south of this camp. (Low hills, widely spaced Larrea but many other large shrubs very common. Substrate varies from light gravel to dark red on hill sides. Birds sighted: Horned Lark, Loggerhead Shrike, White-crowned Sparrow, Black-throated Sparrow, Mourning Dove (common), House Finch (common), Costa's Hummer, Common Raven, Common Crow, & Laddebacked Woodpecker, Ash- throated Flycatcher. On short walks in P.M. I found a nest of House Finches with 4 light-blue eggs and 1 newly hatched nestling (in low thick shrub) I later found the nest of a Costa's Hummer in a fairly thin, low shrub.
