Hefner, M.S. 1974 16 Feb cont Journal * 9 mi NE of Johannesburg, in canyon 10 mi. N of Cuttback lake, S. Bernardino Co. 3200' Calg., off of Trona Rd. and traveled approx. 5 miles (with several turns) to a point approx. 9 mi NE of Johannesburg. We set up camp here and set out 75 live and 10 snap traps. The wind blew continually; daytime high temp. approx. 60° F. 17 Feb 8:30 AM - 9 mi. NE of Johannesburg, in canyon 10 mi N of Cuttback lake, S. Bernardino Co. 3200' Calg., 8:30 pm - David and Diane checked traps with following results: ♀ 17 Perognathus formosus 2 Dipodomys meriamii Success: 19/95 ≈ 20% We hiked during the day and found several short mine shafts (10-20') (in one we collected: 2 Pipistrellus hesperus The wind and cool temp. cont throughout the day. We sighted one chukker and several loggerhead shrike, besides many desert sparrows. 4:30 - We drove down the road toward the center of the main canyon and set 75 live and 20 snap traps.
