Hafner m.s.
1973
Journal
30 Dec. 3:00 PM. - Tijunga Canyon, approx. 10 mi.
N.E. of Sunland - near tree farm on hill to
right of road past big bridge 1/4 mi. (new
road marker "7.43", Los Angeles Co. Calif. 2500).
John Hafner, Kevin & Kenny Ramsey and
I set 120 live traps and 150 snap traps
in same local as Set #4 of 28 Dec 1973.
This is the locality I had caught Dipodomys
agilis. Slight uphill grade, varying
from sparse Odonostoma (sp.) community
to more lush growth (all bushes) in
area immediately N. of young grove of
pines planted perhaps 15 years ago. Ground
shows much evidence of recent (5-10 yrs)
ago fire. Area in which Dipodomys caught
somewhat less dense in vegetation than
surrounding vegetation.
31 Dec. Tijunga Canyon, near marker "7.43" adjacent
to tree plantation (as above)
7:00 AM. Checked traps:
10 Dipodomys agilis
1 Microtus (californicus) ?
18 Peromyscus sp.
16 Neotoma fuscipes
Success: 35/270 = 13%
John reported seeing evidence of (Tree) squirrels
in adjacent pine grove [all specimens given to
Texas Tech. University]
