Gullion 1949 Mustela vison - 1 - Aug 15 Big Lagoon, Humboldt Co, Calif. I encountered about 2:30 p.m. on the side of a mud bank along an old channel of Maple Creek, below the Hammond Lumber Co. Bridge. It was foraging along the base of the bank. When I saw it I fired on it with a full load of #10 shot, perhaps evidencing the animal but by no means stopping it. it dashed into the nearby Scirpus where I chased it, getting very close on 2 or 3 but not being able to make the hill. Finally it dashed to another - Thicker - patch of Scirpus where I lost track of it. It was a dark chocolate brown, a very sleek animal, about 15 to 18 inches long. Aug 17 - same locality at 9:15 this morning, while working over a Virginia Rail I had just collected, a mink came thru the dense Eleocharis lining the west edge of the "Duck Pond" in the Marsh at the south end of the lagoon. It came to within about 4 feet of me before I realized it was there, and believing it a rat, I was preparing to club it with the
