Phalaenoptilus mutellii -1-
Sept 5 Red Mtn., 14 mi. S Hayfork, 5300ft. Trinity Co., Calif.
1 bird collected about 7:30 p.m. on the crest
of the saddle between Dubabella and Red
Mtn. The bird was apparently resting
in a mass of Ceanothus cuneatus or in a
small Jeffrey Pine. As I approached
the bird, imitating it, the bird flew out
to meet me, circling around me 2 or 3
times and then settling on the ground less
than 20 feet from me, when it remained
while I shifted to a lower ammunition
charge.
Sept 7 same locality - Last night I heard a poorwill
calling - it sounded as tho it came from
the same general area from which I collected
the above bird.
