Jullion 1949 Ambystoma gracile - 1- Aug 12 Big Lagoon Humboldt Co., Calif.- Four larvae taken today from a still pond in deep Sitka Spruce forest. The water temperature is 52°F at the bottom, just above the thick accumulation of leaves - mostly of Broad-leaved Maple Acer macrophyllum. All four were taken from a moss covered log crossing the pond, and were in water less than 2 feet deep. The water probably never gets direct sunlight, there being a thick cover of Broad-leaved Maple, Salmon- berry Rubus, Alder Alnus rubra, Sword overhead. The borders of the pond are grown mainly with Sword Fern Polystichum munitum, Lady Fern Athyrium filix - forming a Carex and Spunk Cabbage Lysichiton kamtschacense. In most places the border vegetation above described nearly completely covers the water especially Shunks Cabbage leaves floating on the surface. Leaf litter on the bottom is about 5 inches deep, The pond is about 8 7 feet wide at its widest and not over 2½ feet deep anywhere. A number of water striders are active on the waters surface.
