Gulliver 1949 journal Aug 23 French Camp, 2100 ft., Humboldt Co., Calif.- Started skinning yesterday take. A Crossbill chirped from a nearby Cedar- it was taken. Later in the day Steller Jays were screaming in the Douglas Fir forest just W of the meadow North of camp- I was not able to see the object of their anger. About 12 birds were involved. About 4 p.m. I took a Vermilt Warbler just a few feet from the skinning tent. It was feeding in a Douglas Fir with a mob of Chestnut-backed Chickadees & Red-breasted Nuthatches. I shot I saw another Vermilt Warbler- nearly. that I heard flying squirrels last night Aug 24 Same locality - During the evening I heard a Screeched Owl near camp. Early this morning a Sharp-shinned hawk flew over the meadow N of camp. Starting down my trap line, I saw- 3 Mountain Quail in clearing just below camp. Further down were Acorn Woodpeckers and Steller Jays fighting for possession of a black oak. Woodpeckers seemed to have the upper hand. Still further down, on the break of the slope, & @ gang of Steller Jays seemed to be excited about something- a chipmunk was also chirping. Saw a Vermilt Thrush foraging under the dense Cedar-Douglas Fir forest. To the break of the # slope I have caught 1 Clethraionomys and 2 Peromyscus.
