Aug 17 Big Lagoon, Humboldt Co., Calif.
heard, saw and fried on one Virginia
Rail in a Cares thicket just W
of the New Month of Maple Creek.
Collected a Western Sand piper on the
mud flats just a little further
W from a patch of westerns and Geats.
Worked on over to the Old Month,
scaing up several hundred Pintails
and several Mallards. Worked S across
the Wend of the Cross Channel to
the Send of Long Pond, on over-to
the W side of the duck pond. Many
Pintails took off from there, and
Mallards with "blue-winged"
(probably Cinnamon) Teal passed
overhead. A Pied-billed Grebe
was on the pond and rails were
calling all around. Collected one
Virginia Rail, fired at but missed
another Virginia Rail. Worked down
to the SW corners of the same pond
where I fried at but missed another
Sora , then collected another Virginia
Rail and [illegible] nearly collected an
American Bittern at the same time.
While writing notes there a Mink
approached to within about 2 feet
