H.V. Grinnell-1925 mineral, 4800 ft. July 15 four foraging young, about as big as hen's eggs, came from behind scratching and pecking. When the nearest was within eighteen inches of my knee the unseen parent, some- where behind me, clucked a different note and the chicks retreated cautiously, to be led quietly away by the parent. I am sure that there were more young in the brood than I saw.
