H.W. Grinnell -19/5 34. Yosemite, Calif. rocks about the bush, giving one the impression that the squirrels carry the fruits down out of the bushes before eating them. September 11 The mornings are becoming a trifle chilly. This morning about half an hour after sun- lit struck the valley floor I saw a Gray Squirrel scam- ping across the road with long wisps of grass standing out on both sides of his mouth. He carried his load to the top of a black oak and disappeared with it into a hole. Twice within the last few days I have seen other Gray Squirrels carrying home loads of grass stems. September 16 A live & Flying Squirrel was brought to me this morning by Mrs Miller, who says that it fell from the nest- hole, high up in a black oak near the government stables, this morning. It is about one-third grown.
