of Vernal Falls. To judge from the scattered papers this is a favorite lunching place with tourists. Two blue jays, an excessively fat ground squirrel and three chipmunks immediately made their appearance and approached within ten feet of us. From their actions we decided that they have learned to depend on picnickers for at least a portion of their rations.

The berries of the chokecherry (Prunus demissa) and of the coffeeberry (Rhamnus are in their prime just now. Within the past few days I have frequently observed flocks of seven or eight Western Tanagers feeding upon the ripe coffeeberries. Ground squirrels, too, are very fond of them.
