Aceae, H. 1990 December 20 Only brief scattered showers since early yesterday PM, and this morning the river and streams are down to normal level. Sunny, partly cloudy at 1000 hr. From =1430-1700hr walked to Arboretum, to El Salto and on out SOE. In the Arboretum seeing logs found 2 Peripatus, 1 amphygygid w/gonzo on her back, and an adult (thin looking) Bufo haematiticus. Saw a juvenile B. haematiticus in leaf litter just out of the lab cleaning at =1745hr. Stars out after dinner, no rain yet today. Checked out the Cantarana Swamp =2230hr - almost no frogs calling, no snakes, no substantial rain in >=36 hrs. December 21 Leaving for San Jose Today - bright and sunny for such a cool night! Arrived at Hotel Galilea at 8/530hr, had dinner w/Carmen Rojas in Hotel Amstel. Forgot to note that when I visited the Serpentario on the 7th a typically small Bothrops asper was evidently courting their large, freshly shed f - crawling along her back from head to tail: jerking his chin down periodically . The was stretched out and the size difference was great enough he looked as if crawling on a limb. They were not in copula however. December 22 at 1/30 hr, as I lay on my bed in the Hotel Galilea, a powerful earthquake hit - short, but so strong all the plate glass fell out of the pasteleria next door and it made a big crack in the wall of the Hotel lobby. I made it down the two flights of stairs in a few seconds, dressed in only shoes and jeans. By 1345hr
