Greene, H. 1990 October 29 "Bird Valley" (Jan Kalina's name?), and by then I had to (continued) stop to empty water out my boots. The last long hill is steep and climbs almost 1000', and Jens and I logged each other on. At one point I thought of Wendy Roberts and knew she would roar past us not even party! Jens and I periodically lapsed into disbelief that our porters, most of whom look 6-9 years old and are probably twice that (judging from questioning the kids who were following me around the evening of the 26th), who carry loads of 50-70 lbs. up and down these slopes on their heads - barefooted, w/out slipping or partly heavily, for a pitiful wage. Ruhiza, Bwindi Forest Reserve, Kabale Dist., Uganda Jens and I arrived here ~1500h, preceded by Jim and Bob. The porters, Vincent, etc. arrived about an hour later, even tho we met them going out to get our stuff on the trail. Had a Power Bar, orange drink, and two slices of salamine - juicy, greasy meat seemed absolutely delicious! Dinner w/ Jan and Tom; then to bed, very weary at 2100h and a fitful night. I dreamed Claudia, Chris Schneider, and I were cooking dinner. I dropped a huge skillet of boiling oil on the floor, had to leap and hang on to some bar to avoid losing my bare (?!) feet, and Claudia was yelling at me for ruining everything! October 30 Overcast. We are still settling into the social scene here - sharing a house w/ Jonathan Bararga, Deputy Director,
