August 21 at 1515hr. C. molossus #3 has crossed the
(continued) road and is just north of it, near the base
of a large brush and difficult to see. As Wade
circled to spot him, a small Sphyrelagus
audioloni jumped toward the snake, squeaked,
and bounded out of sight. at 15:17 the
snake yawned; at 15:18 moved head slightly;
at 15:19 a volley of tongue-flicks; at 15:20
a "big" yawn and we can see he's in a flat
coil. I think he struck (because of the yawns)
and missed (because he didn't trail) the
rabbit. at 15:37hr we found C. molossus
#5 under a low plant ~1m from the dying
yucca where she was yesterday, in a flat
coil w/ head up and horizontal on the outer coil,
tail and rattle hidden. at 1545hr. C. molossus
#3 is gone. at 1554 hr. we find C. molossus
#6 under a low bush next to Spanish bayonette
and ~5 m upslope from yesterday and ~50 m
west of the corner telephone pole. It is in a tight
coil w/ tail and rattle hidden, head at an up felt
on the inside or an outer coil. Went road hunting
w/Wade Sherbrooke, including three passes over the
Rucker Canyon- Bernardino massasauga site. We
saw Crotalus scutulatus, Pituophis melanoleucus
(one immature, 20.1 mi SW State Fire Rd., Wade took
it), and an adult ♂ Sistrurus catenatus from
