21 April Sunny and windy. Released the Crotalus mitchelli (see 18April) at capture site, took photographs, ≈1000hr.
It took refuge in the same crech by which originally captured. Went to Jeff's Ura study site, on N. edge of the flow - saw only Crepidophorus, Uta, an adult ♂ Callisaurus, and Chris saw one Ura.
Not warm yet. Went to the Noristransact/power line road and drove to crest ridge ≈ 8 mile S. of National Trails Hwy. Saw Uta and Sauromalus near the Piszah Hilton. Beyond lava, in creozote, found a smallish Gopherus at ≈1500hr beside the road and active, w/≈10 growth annuli. ♂(?) has several grooves and chips anteriorly and posteriorly on one side of the carapace and some nichs on the plastron - coyote, lava, or what? Stopped in an area of sparse yucca and claudia ad I each got a very large Tantuscia vizilis. Jeff got a ♀ Sauromalus at the highest place we stopped. We back to his Ura site on N. edge of the flow, but saw none. While we hunted lizards, Claudia checked out Brian McCarthy's report and found large quantities of raptor pellets and droppings under the railwrod bridge (ie, our tracks) N of the crats. Returned to trails ≈ 1630 hr and I checked the crech for the C. mitchelli - still there, several inches in, quiescent w/ head facing out. We read hunted.
