August 8 Had truck serviced in the morning. Did laundry and visited w/ Hardy's in the afternoon. ~1930 Howard Tawber and I drove to ~10 miles beyond # Sells m Hwy 86 and back. Saw a few Scaphiopus, several Bufo alvarius, and one B. retiformis. Snakes includes an adult and juv. Crotalus scutulatus (later not saved), C. atrox, C. cerastes, C. tigris, Rhinocodon lecontei, Arizona elegans (not saved), and Pituophis melanoleucus (not saved).
August 9 Spent last night with the Hawlens and arrived back in Portal by mid-afternoon. I drove in by way of San Simon and Paradise, a beautiful ride. I hit a Phrynosoma douglasii that was basking in the middle of the road near Paradise, in an area of grassland and scattered juncipers. Gerald Meher (Placerville) gave me a pair of Crotalus molossus he found in contact in the road at Stewart Camp in Care Creek Canyon. I road hunted to the Sistrurus site and got only three snakes, one of them an aberrant Crotalus atrox. The snake is an adult that evidently lacks black and white on its body - ground color and blotches are blurred, although the tail rings are ~ normal.
August 10 Barney Tonberlin, Tony Snell, and I left ~1030h for a site we visited a couple of years ago for Crotalus pricei, at ~8100' el. and 1/2 air mile E. of Barfoot Lookout. Sun was shining brightly
