August 5 (continued)
Then drove down to State Line Rd. for some photographs.
Missy spotted a long-dead cow, now moistened
enough by the rain (I surmise) to have attracted
6-8 turkey vultures. After lunch at the Portal Cafe
& a rest, we hiked the Ash Spring - Herb-Martyr
Dam trail - to retrieve Missy's water bottle and
take a sample of bark from the log where we
caught the two Crotalus molossus . The site is
shown as right on the 6100' contour on a topo map.
Saw only a few Sceloporus jarrovii and S. virgatus.
Thunder and dark clouds over the peaks as we walked
out, and later when we stopped at the Cathedral Rock
Vista Point there were scattered raindrops. Ran into
Ed Heske (former MVZ student) over dinner at the Portal
Store. Roood hunted up Care Creek Canyon to the SW
Research Station and out ~5 mi E. of Portal, but
saw only toads and 1 juvenile Crotalus scutulatus.
August 6
Bright sun and blue sky when we awoke, and
for the first time saw Urosaurus ornatus and
Sceloporus clarkii on brick walls of Hardy's house.
Road hunting on Portal Rd. We saw a neonate
and adult (~1 m) Crotalus atrox (no food in
either).
August 7
Took Missy to Tucson airport, then road hunted over
Gates Pass (Tucson Metro.) and out Sandario Rd. in
the Arivac Valley. Saw only an adult Bufo alvarius.
