1988
July 31 Portal, Cochise Co., Arizona
arrived here in mid-afternoon with Missy Wood,
having spent the previous two nights with David
and Billie Hardy and two days before that driving
from Berkeley. Went road hunting at ~ 1830 hr to
the Sistrurus area, ~ 18-25 miles SW of State
Line Rd. on Hwy 80. Found a large adult, very
light-feeling Pituophis melanoleucus stretched out
and motionless just SW of the little bridge at the
base of the curve/hill that Barney Tomberlin says is
best for Sistrurus. Snake made an exaggerated
S-coil, hissed loudly, and struck when I touched
it with snake hooks. Let it go. Collected a juvenile
Lampropeltis getulus, which only crawled and squirmed
when seized; a small Crotalus scutulatus that
crawled in a frenzy, rattled, and struck when
restrained; and a fleshy lit adult C. scutulatus
in the same area. Saw several Sceloporus
couchi and some Bufo on the highway.
August 1 Picked up several frozen snakes from Barney
Tomberlin. Good rain at midday. Cool and
overcast all day. Road hunted from ~ 1900-2230, up
into canyon, back through Portal, several passes
through the Sistrurus area and again through the
canyon (to South Fork). Saw only a live Crotalus
scutulatus (collected), and a DOR Thamnophis
mccannus near the Sistrurus curve. Numerous
