14 December Occidental w/ Fayner, Delrah, Laura, and Judy. Saw two
(continued) Potos flavus high in trees, lots of tiny Hyler and lots of
Eleutherodactylus diastema calling (today was sunny and simply
very clear - lots of stars, but we had a hard rain @ 0530h).
At 2015h an adult Dromadodes inornatus, frozen as it
crawled up an aerial stem from a fallen log, ~1.5m above
the ground. Joz was in dense second growth beside trail,
amidst fernsliods, vines, etc. (707 + 115 + ? (tip missing) mm;
36g). Only reactions to handling were crawling, thrashing,
and emission of a mild odor.
At ~2100h I spotted a
f Norops capito (82+135mm , 12.5g, ova palpable but
small). She was on a leaf ~20cm above the ground
in forest, and struggled, gaped w/ tongue elevated,
and bit when held.
15 December As I crossed the bridge from breakfast at ~0645h I
noted an adult m Bradypus variegatus in a Cecropia
tree just W. of the bridge on the S. bank of the Rio
Puerto Viejo - I saw a sloth (same?) there yesterday afternoon,
and have seen a snake of similar size there at least
6 times (days) since arriving here in November.
When I
returned at ~0920h I saw the sloth move out a limb
and eat fresh-looking fruit. At ~0930h I spotted
a lutra longicaudus in the middle of the main
limb of the large fallen tree that extends N-ward
into the river ~200m downstream.
At times the
tter lay on its side, evidently to groom, as I
saw the head placed against the rump, shoulder
