Freese, lt 1987 8 December coiling and uncoiling but never holding a "ring," (continued) When handled and palpated it twisted violently, withdrew the posterior and repeatedly "pricked" me with the tail spine, and expelled a strong smell. Crawled rapidly away when released. 9 December The guard reported a Bothrops asper adult the last few nights along the sidewalk to the River Station, so I spent ~30 minutes after breakfast looking for it without success. Saw only a juvenile Nops capito. Overcast. Going to San José today to celebrate Carmen's birthday. 10 December Instituto Clodomiro Picado, Costa Rica Spent the day here but didn't take any photographs because the shutter on my camera locked and I stupidly thought it was broken - late proved to be only a bad connection w/ the battery! Saw a Dipsas articulata said to probably be from Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí. Very slow to react, but with some prodding it assumed a rigid, exaggerated "viper" pose, with quadratoles expanded (NB: does this occur in Sibon? Seen occasionally in Ninia - nice example for phylogenetic analysis). An Erythrolamprus minutus from an unknown locality (with a bright orange nape band) body flattened, hid head, thrashed elevated coiled tail.
