5 July (continued)
large enough it seemed to more than fill the month,
and the carapace of which could easily be heard
cracking from up where we stood. Once we could
clearly see that the legs were removed, seemingly by
either tearing or slamming against the log or
both. Two large trees a few tens of meters apart
were searched in less than 10 minutes, and at
least two prey were caught at the second. The
two seemed to hunt independently, but several
times mutually approached and contacted each
others' heads.
6 July A cloudy, drizzly morning - rain supposedly
started ~0100 hrs. I actually thought of getting
a blanket during the night. Checked the
Lachesis muta at CES 530 at 1600hr - under Danasa.
7 July Overcast w/ sunny spots. Walked out to Holdridge 225,
where yesterday Rodolfo saw a Bothrops asper on
the trail. Saw it at 0815 hr, loosely coiled on the
trail at E edge (successional plots), facing into the
trail and seemingly asleep. Took pictures. It is
an adult, perhaps 1.5-1.7 m total, brown and gray,
and grey skinning. Judging from length and
tail shape, it is a female and perhaps recently
gave birth. Walked back to the CCL and went
around the loop. Missed what was either a Dermaplution
or a juvenile Mastigodryas when it dashed under
the boardwalk at ~0840. At 0859 hr, CCL 950m,
