vicinity. Saw lots of Bufo alvarius and / Scaphiopus couchii. Saw 2 Crotalus cerastes (AOR 2345 hr, AOR/POR 2359 hr), 1 L. atrox (AOR 2314 hr), and 1 Vulpes macrotus (AOR 2332 hr). Also >3 Canis latrans, of which I saw a pair lope off among saguaros at dusk before I left the Hardy's house in Tucson (Sabino Canyon).
31 July
Up late. Went shopping. Storms all around Tucson by late afternoon, and some rain as I left at ~1630 hr for Howard Lanter's place in the Arava Valley. After dinner, road hunted from ~2000-2400 hr. Saw 1 neonate Crotalus scutulatus, 1 Rhinocoleus leorlin, 3 Pituophis melanoleucus, 1 Haplopeltis scitulus (crawling across road in driving rain), 1 Phrynosoma solare (cactus on road, well after dark), several coyotes (two of which I stopped w/ mouth noises), numerous Scaphiopus couchii, and dozens of Bufo alvarius. We were driving mostly in the valley (on Sandario Rd.) or foothills (back and forth over Gates Pass Rd.). The Bufo alvarius are absurd sapos: alive they look like fresh cow pies - round, moist, and green. Dead they are large enough to be a little macabre, w/ bloody legs poking the sky. Sometimes as the car approaches they rise high and run w/ a strange fast crab walk! Got home ~0130 hr.
