7 March Left San Francisco ~0030 AM, arrived San Jose,
Coster Rica ~1530. Cab to hotel $7.00, Hotel
Galilea $12 + tax. Dinner 110 colones (40 colones/#).
On the flight down got a nice sunlit view
of the Nicaraguan coast - in some places could
see highlights of sheet of water among trees
over big expanse of coast - swamps? Incredible
clouds.
8 March Spent an hour after breakfast (40.7 col.) looking
for botas de hule - rubber boots. Couldn't
find any in the mercado or elsewhere. Caught
Sansa flight to Rio Frio (160 colones), after
a lot of trouble in the airport (I had a
reservation but no ticket - which was better
than vice versa). Picked up at Rio Frio
by Bruce Williamson (OTS course coordinator)
and McDonnelly (USC student). Rode to
Punto Viejo for beer and boots (240 colones),
then by canoe across Rio Puerto Viejo to La
Selva.
9 March Up early, and out on West River Trail w/ Mo.
Went as far as end of property, then
returned to AC lab and took a circle
by way of the Bio Research Trail and back
down the West River Trail. No snakes, but
lots of frogs and lizards. Dendrobates
pumilio everywhere, some calling. Two
