area about 10m in. At first I could only see hindquarters and tail. Then it stepped into full view and paused, took two steps, then melted out of sight. The lack of sound, given how noisy the forest can be, was stunning. It is little wonder that Indians revere the big cats and believe in forest gods! This cat clearly had the right spotted pattern, a distinctly marked tail, and weighed I guess ~50-60 lbs.
13 July
Been checking the hachesis several times each day. This AM I got up at 0200 and checked the two on the research trail every hour or so until dawn. Heard a rooster at 0407, saw 2 small Eleutherodactyls biporcatus and a Sphyllagus brasilensis at 0452. Sky was noticeably light at 0445 but forest dark; trail easy to see at 0507.

Continue to check the three hachesis several times each day. Adult ♂ on Near Loop Trail has been inside an old treefall for days, hard to observe. The juvenile ♀ was unexpectedly in under her fern today and has a big food bollege. At 0928 hr found a huge (>1.5 m) Lampropeltis triangulum crawling slowly in litter just off the
