9 January Left Berkeley on 8AM flight to Miami. Early dinner w/ Jay & Becky Sarage, then flight to Costa Rica, arriving at approx 9PM. Picked up at air port by Cathy Singe and others.
10-11 January Spent two days in San Jose gettin a collecting permit from Parques Nacionales, buyin supplies, etc. We stayed at the Hotel/Apartamento Moravia - very nice & friendly.
12 January Canizal Prov. Alajuela, Costa Rica 1440m
On the way to the Zona, our Toyota broke down at this little junction. Michael Fragumen, a plant collector from U. Massachusetts, tore down a Monstera adroid from approx 2.5 m up a tree beside a small stream to the right of the road at the first curve past Canizal. In one leaf apex were 2 small Centrolella that seem to be C. diox.
Camp beside Quebrada Cantarana, approx 10 km WSW Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui, Provincia Heredia, Costa Rica
We arrived here approx 6:00, after a long bumpy trip in w/ Land Cruisers and a tractor - the latter, surprisingly, unable to cross the Rio Pedije.
Set up camp and walked around. Frogs callin (Eleutherodactylus, hylid?) but couldn't find them. Not raining. Walked up hill after dinner. Saw Sylvilagus on road cut, no frogs on vegetation. approx 20:50h found an Eleutherodactylus & a Smilisca sittin on a
