Greene, H.
1979
28 Feb Left Oakland Airport at 7AM w/ Dave Wake,
Kaz Yanov, John Cadle for Ontario-Riverside.
Arrived there ~8, rented 4-wheel drive
van at JC Riverside, ate breakfast &
drove up to San Dimas Canyon.
San Dimas Canyon, 1.1 mi NNE Foothill
Freeway, San Bernardino Co., California
Sunny, warm. Steep, chaparral-covered
slopes; canyon bottoms sparsely to
heavily wooded. Water in streams.
1 Anceides lugubris, 1 Batrachoseps
nigivertex, 1 Gopherus multicarinatus,
1 Thamnophis couchi.
I saw 1 large Gopherus active in
thick brush high on a hill, but it easily
slipped away. Caught 1 w/ complete
tail (tip later broken in sack) in lush
grass in open, near trees at roadside.
Heard it, then saw it moving towards
a large sheet of cardboard. Seemed to
fold legs and be moving largely by
lateral undulation.
(see general notes on this trip at
end of 4 March)
