Hare, H. 1981 8 June (continued) by a ravine w/ scattered oaks. The spot is 0.4 mi N. of a mailbox w/ the address of 12520 Morgan Territory Rd. Took photos. Ordway Ranch Vasco Rd., Contra Costa Co. California Spent about 1 hour here walking in oak woodland (including small, boulder-strewn canyons), including the place where two juvenile Masticophis lateralis (HWG 105-6) were collected in April by Fish and Game personnel (they saw 4 in two days at this site). This is an enormous cattle ranch of grassland (from Vasco Rd W. to the base of the E-facing slope), bounded by the steep ridge that is also the E. boundary of the Mallery Ranch. The lower slopes are mainly blue oak, and it is a truly beautiful place! 30 June Went to Conal Hollow Rd., Alameda-San Joaquin Co., to Rd hunt w/ Roger S. Thorp, a herpetologist from England. Found a just-hit subadult Pitophis on Mines Rd., a very large AOR Pitophis on Tesla Rd., and an AOR yearly Grotalus viridis on Conal Hollow Rd. It got quite chilly just after dark, and we saw the last snake just as darkness fell. All snakes saved.
