Greene, H. 1980 11 May (cont.) an outstanding lunch. Saw what I thought was a Crotaphytus vicinotorum on a boulder near the Cal City turnoff from Hwy 14. It was ~1.2m above ground and escaped in a burrow at the boulder's base. Stopped in Joshua trees on E slope of (sic) Tehachapi s caught Uta stantusia . Very windy. Someone had turned many of the logs recently and not replaced them. We left for Berkeley ~1630 hro. 20.0 miles SE Bakersfield (Hwy 99) on Hwy 58, Kern Co., California Large adult Jar propellus getulus DOR at ~1700. Snake smells pretty bad but OK outside - early morning still? This locality is on grass slopes of Tehachapis going down into the San Joaquin Valley. 15 May Briones Regional Park, Contra Costa Co., California Worked from Bear Creek entrance, 0800-1200 h, w/~50 ZooL. 107 students and 5 teaching assistants. Saw Pituophis Eunees, Gerhonotus multicarinatus, Sceloporus , Thamnophis couchi , T. elegans , Diadophis , Cortia , Coluber Taicha , Hyla , Ensatina . Taicha were adults in a pond at the end of the valley, and wee observed as they periodically surfaced from the corks of the pond, gulped air, and immediately returned to the bottom.
