2 April
SE side of Phoenix Lake, W. of Ross, Marin Co., California
D.B. Wake brought me 3 Diadophis punctatus in
a plastic bag, 1 of which had regurgitated a
Batrachoseps alternatus and its autotomized
tail. I pickled the salamander (HWC 1063)
and measured the Diadophis (SV + tail):
305+70; 210+45; 143+30.
19 April
Mt. St. Helena, Napa Co., California
Hiked to near base of one peak, ~6-8 mi round
trip, w/ Kristine, Kent, and Carl Tollestrup.
Cold and foggy, yet when some sun came
out briefly, we saw numerous Sceloporus,
including some S. graciosus. These were on
rocks and snags, and some escaped into
holes under embedded rocks.
23 April
Drove to Sacramento in early afternoon, and as
I crossed the range around Fairfield I saw
a hawk (red-tail?) fly over dangling an
unidentified snake.
8 May
Left Berkeley last night at ~1900 w/ Kurt Schwerke,
Robert Seib, and John Carothers. Arrived in
Boston ~3:30 AM and slept on side of road
til after 7. Breakfast in Barstow then on to
Piogen Crater, San Bernardino Co., California
arrived ~8:30 AM and parked near
where the road turns N. across the
