8 February Briones Regional Park, Contra Costa Co., California
Entered the Alhambra Valley Rd. entrance at
x 1200 w/ M. A. R. Koehl and walked about
til x 1500. Cool and light drizzle. Saw
hundreds of Tanicha on dirt road leading
to the lagoons and in the water, and
various stages of courtship, egg-laying,
and egg eating. Heard a few Hyla
regilla [illegible] around the lagoons (none
seen and no eggs) and found a few
Batrachoseps under logs. While we ate
lunch under a small oak grove a young
mule deer walked slowly by, feeding.
It seemed not to even see us, perhaps
because we were motionless and because
there were several nearby snags on
its horizon. About 10 m from us it
suddenly froze, flared its nostrils repeatedly,
and moved its head laterally several
times as if trying to see whatever it
smelled. Nice walk. Also saw feces
