Hlane, H. 1981 17 January Tilden Park Berkeley Contra Costa County California Elizabeth Pierson, a graduate teaching assistant in Natural History of the Vertebrates, saw a small Thamnophis partially out of a hole here on this date. 8 February Briones Regional Park, Contra Costa Co., California Entered the Alhambra Valley Rd. entrance at x 1200 w/ M. A. R. Koehl and walked about til x 1500. Cool and light drizzle. Saw hundreds of Tanicha on dirt road leading to the lagoons and in the water, and various stages of courtship, egg-laying, and egg eating. Heard a few Hyla regilla [illegible] around the lagoons (none seen and no eggs) and found a few Batrachoseps under logs. While we ate lunch under a small oak grove a young mule deer walked slowly by, feeding. It seemed not to even see us, perhaps because we were motionless and because there were several nearby snags on its horizon. About 10 m from us it suddenly froze, flared its nostrils repeatedly, and moved its head laterally several times as if trying to see whatever it smelled. Nice walk. Also saw feces
