Greene, H 1980 2 December (continued) several large blobs of water, presumably from the Callopistes. The tunnel was generally 5-10 cm in diameter and rather firm-sided. Eventually we reached the lizard w/in ~3 m of the surface and caught her (?). She went completely limp w/ closed eyes. She opened them and her mouth when tapped on the head. Remained this was for at least 30 minutes, then active - but resumed limpness whenever handled). Meantime, one student had seen another large Callopistes in the hills, and a girl saw a third dash off near some dead black vultures. Below the crest (same ridge, further SW from where we dug the F up) Mark found a burrow under some trees in an embankment, with a tail drag mark and black feathers near the entrance. Looked impossible to dig up, and we left for Negritos @ 1345. Went to John's house for beer and then back to hotel in Talara to pickle lizards.
