Keene, H. 1979 12 May Pt Pinole Regional Park, Richmond, California Walking the dog w/ Dona shortly before sunset -- still visible above Mt. Tam but road is in shade. At x 1900 hr we encounter an adult Gopherus multicarinatus basking on the asphalt road shoulder. The site is less than 100 m W of the RR bridge and in the public picnic area. The lizard is flat against the pavement, w/ limbs extended alternately left [illegible] forward and backward. Thus, I can't be sure if it was really basking or just "froze" in mid-stude before I saw it. We approached to w/in .5 m w/out it moving, but when the dog touched it w/ her snout it moved across the entire width of the road. She cornered it just before it reached glass on the opposite side, and it turned and traveled back to the original site where she cornered it again. This time the lizard turned its body in a tight coiled, pointed its head upward w/ mouth agape, and circled to follow the dog's movements. She finally came very close (~4-5 cm) and it jumped (?)
