San Felipe, S.L. Lower Calif. Mexico April 17, 1926. Gilmore 1926 53. eggs apace. Two of the eggs were in the tree and the other was in the adjacent one. Two nests were about 20 ft. from the ground and one about 15 ft. high. The trees were members of a long string about a half mile long in a large wide sandy draw. Numerous other nests were present but were old. One set of eggs was presented to Mrs. Confield with complements of the University of Calif. In the way back I found a large Crotalus coiled in the sand in the sun and it was about 8: A.M. Walking in front of him so that my shadow fell across his face brought forth no sign of life or any rattle. However, a stiff punch with a stick gotting produced a quick strike which was quickly followed by another longer and more vicious one, at the same time moving toward me. Only, util he it realized that it could not reach me and striking at the death stick did no good, did he try to escape.
