W.J. Francisco 1963 23. Journal. March 26. Hastings Reservation, Monterey County, 1620 Resumed field observations of quail. Weather has again closed in to Overcast with breaks, AC, SC, & ST; moderately gusty wind. March 27, Wednesday. Hastings Reservation, Monterey County. 0600 started out on quail observing, lead quarters cover. Weather noticeably warmer than this time yesterday, nearly calm. Sky overcast AS, with dark low Ns moving in from NW. After a break from 0700 to 0800, I set out on a more extensive tour of the re- servation. A few breaks appeared and sunlight brightened SC in the east. At 0813 adjusted position of Red Foxboro probe (over grass) to improve protection from evening sun. 0940. Near the top of the hill south of Davis house, came on 3 resting bucks; all showed beginning of antler growth. One, darker in color of coat and larger, had antler stubs 3-4 inches long with a suggestion of a fork - the others had only wide long cylindrical stubs.
