W.J. Francis 1963 15. Journal March 7. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co. Sparrows, Mourning Doves, around house. Stable field south of road: Horned Larks, Meadowlark. Next field over ridge, Loggerhead Shrike. In brushy slope, California Quail, Brown Towhee. Between pasture and stubble field: Say's Phoebe. March 8. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co. Awakened at dawn by quail noises just outside my bedroom; sky still gray, clear and calm. Mary Brewer Blackbirds in roost after quail left. 1000 Trip to Navajo Ridge to observe California Condors. On return via Camelote Canyon about 1430 stopped to investigate Golden Eagle's nest. Male flew from nearby perch, female observed on nest for about 5 minutes, then flew off in same direction as the male. March 9. McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo County, Calif. 0615 Observing Quail around the ranch house. Weather, nearly overcast with stratus estimated at 5000' break visible over Salinas Valley to west.
