W. J. Francis 1964. 72. Journal. Dec. 31. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County. 11:20 at Behavin Lab. pen. Serviced rain gauge, 1.72", total 15.75"; storm since Dec. 18, 9.18". Weather mostly clear with few CU, moderate westerly wind, slight turbulence, good visibility. Scattered me can of grain in the pen. Set and baited traps outside the Behavin Lab. 16:30. Checked traps - took several birds in trap #1, but before examining them, I slipped and fell on a hard area of brush, and gashed my right hand badly at the base of the thumb. I picked over the trap to release the birds, then returned to the highway and flagged down a passing motorists who took me to Lowell Hospital, where the wound was dressed and eight stitches taken. Meanwhile Cruz, whom I called from the hospital, went up to the traps, collected my gear and brought back the Ford which I had left up there, after releasing two birds that were entangled in the net used for removing the birds.
