water hole, and scattered grain.

Reservation, mileage 56895.
1730 Arrived Hastings Natural History
Reservation, Monterey County, mileage
57039. Weather clear, very light
wind, and warm.
Aug. 25. 0655 to 0740 observed
quail from parked car alongside
the lake house, getting a good
count. Spent the morning sun-
marizing weather data obtained
locally, then in the afternoon
visited Bird's in Calera Canyon
& Halsey's in Monterey.
Aug. 26. 0630 observed from
parked car in same position as
yesterday but no quail. A
Cooper's (a large Sharp-shinned)
Hawk was hunting over the area,
making numerous passes at
cottontails, and even harrying
a jackrabbit on the hillside!
although quite large and an
efficient flyer, this bird was
in juvenile plumage. 0815 Left
for McMillan Ranch, mileage 57127.
