Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co water hole, and scattered grain. 140 Left Berkeley for Hastings Reservation, mileage 56895. 1730 Arrived Hastings Natural History Reservation, Monterey County, mileage 57039. Weather clear, very light wind, and warm. Aug. 25. 0655 to 0740 observed quail from parked car alongside the lake house, getting a good count. Spent the morning sun- marizing weather data obtained locally, then in the afternoon visited Bird's in Calera Canyon & Halsey's in Monterey. Aug. 26. 0630 observed from parked car in same position as yesterday but no quail. A Cooper's (a large Sharp-shinned) Hawk was hunting over the area, making numerous passes at cottontails, and even harrying a jackrabbit on the hillside! although quite large and an efficient flyer, this bird was in juvenile plumage. 0815 Left for McMillan Ranch, mileage 57127.
