Journal.
June 9, McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo County.
potential utilization as nesting cover.
During this trip we saw about 11
deer, including two forked-horn
bucks, with 4 I saw this morning,
if no duplication there are 15
or near the ranch. Several
jackrabbits & very numerous cottontails.
A pair of horned owls near the
adobe ruin.
June 10. Set quail trap in front of home,
and removed, examined, & banded
quail at 0900. Then rode over to
north side of ranch, stopping to
examine very luxuriant and
freshly fruited Erodium in the
midst of the soil banks grassland,
and alfalfa in the flat meadow
across the ridge; The latter is
green, with several plants flowering,
but the tips browsed off by
deer in every case, the amount
browsed apparently proportional
to the length of stiff dead stems from
last years growth. Neither the low-
growing alfalfa nor the Erodium
shows any sign of overuse by
quail. Also examined the ex-
closure above the ranch house
