W.J. Francis 1964 Journal. June 9, McMillan Ranch, San Luis Obispo County. potential utilization as nesting cover. During this trip we saw about 11 deer, including two forked-horn bucks, with 4 I saw this morning, if no duplication there are 15 or near the ranch. Several jackrabbits & very numerous cottontails. A pair of horned owls near the adobe ruin. June 10. Set quail trap in front of home, and removed, examined, & banded quail at 0900. Then rode over to north side of ranch, stopping to examine very luxuriant and freshly fruited Erodium in the midst of the soil banks grassland, and alfalfa in the flat meadow across the ridge; The latter is green, with several plants flowering, but the tips browsed off by deer in every case, the amount browsed apparently proportional to the length of stiff dead stems from last years growth. Neither the low- growing alfalfa nor the Erodium shows any sign of overuse by quail. Also examined the ex- closure above the ranch house
