May 17. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co.
though not very thick. Up to 5 feet
tall where undisturbed, 1 1/2 to 2 feet
in areas which were cleared in
April 8. Serviced raingage (0.17"),
filled water hole and spread
a full can of grain.
Small birds noted inside the pen:
House Finch, Song Sparrow, Oregon
Junco, American Goldfinch.
1452. Left the station.
May 18. 0905. Weather at Behavior Lab.
pen: Obscured in thick stratus, base
about 40 feet below station. Very
light wind, no turbulence. Visibility
50-75 yards. Vegetation damp;
ground surface dry. Serviced
Thaygrothermograph and checked
nest.
Took samples of the
dominant grass inside the pen,
and another grass growing just
outside (mixed with wild oats
Avena fatua), to the Herbarium,
where they were identified as
Festuca elatior L. (inside the
pen), and Bromus rigidus Roth,
outside.
