Hartwig Reservation Monterey County. 0630 Made morning survey of local area for quail. 0815 Left Hartwig for McMillan's, via Hunter Liggett Military Reservation, where I made a road survey of Argyle Road & Bear Trap Loop areas. Mr. Fred Coole has left here to work with the Fish & Wildlife Service in Fort Worth Texas; his successor has not arrived. 1315 Gassed at Paso Robles mi .53442, Arrived at McMillan Ranch at 14/15, picked up weather charts & took following from McMillan weather log: "Friday, March 20. Cow calls heard this morning. Quail pairing. Isolated pairs seen as of nesting. "Saturday, March 28. The annual growth... has prospered from the recent rain. North facing slopes are still in condition to produce a normal annual growth. Flaxseed is blooming.... Cow calls have been heard. Pairing is now the rule... quail at ranch house are not coming to feed in yard... "Wednesday, April 1....56 of an inch is radically changing.... drought."
