W.J. Francis 1963 8. Journal Feb. 14. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co, 1005 Clouds breaking; disk of sun visible from crest of ridge above Strawberry Canyon. A circuit of the surrounding area lasting until 1025 revealed no quail activity. At 1030 observed 3 ?? and 5 ?? quail feeding on grass inside miniature train tracks at Tilden Park South Gate. When slightly disturbed when I returned to car parked adjacent to the area they retreated slowly into the brush which covered about half of the enclosure. 1055. Shifted to vicinity of Animal Behavior lab and scouted area around. Noted Brown Towhees, Bushtits, Red-tailed Hawk Sparrow Hawk. This area below base of clonds which are again quite thick, no sun visible; horizontal visibility about 3 miles. 1150 Bright sunshine (intermittent) clouds clearing rapidly Saw 2 quail in Behavior lab kept to Bird Pen. All transplanted Baccharis in enclosure seem to be thriving; young everglptus are well lushed and suitable roots.
