Feb. 14. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co,
1005 Clouds breaking; disk of sun
visible from crest of ridge above
Strawberry Canyon. A circuit
of the surrounding area lasting
until 1025 revealed no quail
activity. At 1030 observed 3 ??
and 5 ?? quail feeding on grass
inside miniature train tracks at
Tilden Park South Gate. When
slightly disturbed when I returned
to car parked adjacent to the
area they retreated slowly into
the brush which covered about half
of the enclosure.
1055. Shifted to vicinity of Animal
Behavior lab and scouted area
around. Noted Brown Towhees, Bushtits,
Red-tailed Hawk Sparrow Hawk.
This area below base of clonds which
are again quite thick, no sun
visible; horizontal visibility about
3 miles. 1150 Bright sunshine
(intermittent) clouds clearing rapidly
Saw 2 quail in Behavior lab kept
to Bird Pen. All transplanted
Baccharis in enclosure seem
to be thriving; young everglptus
are well lushed and suitable roots.
