W.J. Francis 1964. 18. Journal. March 5, Hastings Reservation, Monterey County area, but saw none, and got no replies to artificial quail cell. Re- turned for breakfast at 0830. (Later discussion with Gary Traufner makes it possible that presumed "Marsh Hawks" were in fact White-tailed Kites, which have been seen recently here). 1030. Started up the creek from the headquarters area. Weather cleared to 7/10 CU, moderate westerly wind with slight to moderate turbulence. Creek is entirely dry, even though we are toward the end of the rainy season. I followed the creek a little beyond the second fork, keeping to the right branch both times. At least the creek bed was slightly moist with some fresh green vegetation. By 1110, sky had cleared to variable (1 to 4/10) CU. Returned to h.q. area at 1225, and serviced traps (released 5 Scrub Jays & one wren. Golden-crown in Quail Hollow).
