Dec. 29] Eben McMillan on quail
fluctuations. Returned to Hastings
Reservation with 13 specimens (7 for
Ward Russell at MVZ to fill a
request by Dr. Raiff).
Dec. 30. Hastings Reservation, Monterey
County, Calif. **0700 to 0900 made
further reconnaissance, covering
hills + brushy slopes to east of
buildings, then up canyon above
the barn. Watering trough here is above
ground and not suitable for quail.
Returned over grassy west slope to
pump house, thence to Davis
house. No quail seen. Ample
deer sign. Pair of bluebirds in
large low tale, associated with
large flock (well over 100) &
house finches; also noted Brown
Towhees, Rufous-sided Towhees, Yellow-
billed Magpies, and Scrub Jays in
abundance.
Returned to Berkeley in afternoon,
mileage 142; total mileage this trip
531 miles.
