Dec. 18 Strawberry Canyon Alameda County
0900 Checked traps, no quail; none
were seen or heard in the area.
Dec. 19. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County
0930 Serviced rain gage in Behavior
Lab. pen. Weather: light rain and
drizzle, sky obscured in cloud &
fog in canyon hollows very light
wind with no turbulence. Ground
surface saturated. Visibility variable
100 yards to ½ mile. Checked traps,
no quail. In the trap inside the
Behavior Lab. were a number of feathers
in one corner - appeared to be from an
Acorn Wood pecker, but no signs of
other remains - perhaps a hawk used
the trap as a perch while plucking
a victim. Spread a can of grain
in the pen.
Dec. 20. Strawberry Canyon Alameda County,
0920 Weather at Behavior Lab, obscured
in stratus covering the whole bay
area, no definitive base. light drizzle,
visibility 100 yards in canyon, better
along ridges. Light wind with no
turbulence! Serviced rain gage and
spread a can of grain inside the pen.
