side grassy hillside, some
single and grouped live oaks.
Two possible watering points
for quail - overflow from pump
about 1/4 mile from HQ buildings
provides ground level pool.
Watering trough about 1/2 mile
downstream provides continuous
drip (frozen this morning).
No sign of quail anywhere
along route - several thick live
oaks apparently suitable for roosting
but most contained squirrel nests.
Many badger holes & wood-rat
nests seen.
After sunrise, a herd of 11
deer seen on crest of hill to west
grazing on open grass. 2 indubing
bucks remained together during
15-20 min obsvtn. None
identifiable as faunos.
11:30 Drove with Jim to McMillan
Ranch, San Luis Obispo County (122
miles each way, plus 3 miles around
ranch, total 247 miles). Observed
quail hunting by variety of hunters.
