JOURNAL.
Dec. 28 Friday. Drove to Hastings Reservation, Carmel Valley, Monterey County, Calif., from Berkeley, via U.S. 101, Los Laureles Grade, and Carmel Valley Road (Jamesburg Route). Arrived after dark, and were shown quarters in the Davis house by Mr. Bell (maintenance man), consisting of large community kitchen, large dining room, double sleeping chamber with 4 single beds, and a fireplace. Dishes and kitchen utensils were provided, also ample blankets - memo. for future trips: need small saucepans and kitchen knives, paper towels - pans for baking, boiling, etc., in oven.
Dec. 29, Saturday. Hastings Reservation, Monterey County, California. Reconnoitered along creek downstream from head-quarters building 0705 to 0845. Weather clear and cold, with ice 1/4" thick on watering trough. Creek ravine with variety of shrubs and trees (willows, oaks, etc.). Narrow level open field on east side between creek and road. West
