W. J. Francis 1963 129. Journal Nov. 2. HLMR, Monterey County, Calif. 0700. Checked at Game Management Office to observe quail hunting program operation at the reservation. A line of about 50 hunters were in hand at this time; most were given permits & cleared before 0800. Estimate a total of 175 hunters in areas B, E, F, and G (see photo map), an area of around 200 sq. km. - at least 300 acres per hunter. 1053. First hunter checked in, reported taking a limit but gave away 5; birds very abun- dant - "under every bird patch". By 1400, 48 hunters had checked in early partis included a number of small boys & success was quite low on the average. A number of birds were quite young with incom- plete molt. Youngest noted re- tained #8 primary, #7 only partly grown, and had many juvenile contain feathers. At 1510 an even younger bird noted, a ♂ without black throat, only black under eye & white above, with much juvenile plumage. Weather clear in the morning, gradually clouding up to overcast by noon, with intermittent light to moderate rain beginning about 1300.
