0700. Checked at Game Management
Office to observe quail hunting program
operation at the reservation.
A line of about 50 hunters were in
hand at this time; most were given
permits & cleared before 0800. Estimate
a total of 175 hunters in areas B, E,
F, and G (see photo map), an area
of around 200 sq. km. - at least 300
acres per hunter. 1053. First hunter
checked in, reported taking a limit
but gave away 5; birds very abun-
dant - "under every bird patch".
By 1400, 48 hunters had checked in
early partis included a number of
small boys & success was quite low
on the average. A number of
birds were quite young with incom-
plete molt. Youngest noted re-
tained #8 primary, #7 only partly
grown, and had many juvenile
contain feathers. At 1510 an even
younger bird noted, a ♂ without black
throat, only black under eye & white
above, with much juvenile plumage.
Weather clear in the morning,
gradually clouding up to overcast by
noon, with intermittent light to
moderate rain beginning about 1300.
