W. J. Francis 1963. 115. Journal. Sept. 26. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co. 1845 Returned to Behavior Lab pen for observation of captive gnat. Weather clear calm, pen and surrounding trees already com- pletely shaded. Set trap in pen. Sept. 27. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County. 0910 at Behavior Lab. pen. Weather 2/10 CO, light wind no turbulence. 1640. Again at Behavior Lab. Weather clear, light wind, no turbulence. Sept. 28. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co. Checked trap in the Behavior Lab. pen at 1450, found no gnat, but apparently some grain had been eaten - perhaps by rodents or small birds that could find their way out. Left it set with no additional food outside the trap. Replenished the water hole. At 1505 Relocated the trap along the fence in C-10, where birds pass more frequently. 1535 after experimenting with trap position and watching the birds' reactions, left it unset.
