W.J. Francis 1963 108. Journal. Sept. 2. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda Co. 0845 at Behavin Lab. pen, weather clear, calm, good visibility, dew on the ground vegetation where sun has not yet reached it (over half of the area in the pen. Checked trap outside, released Ember jay, and reset. Serviced instruments, refilled water hole, and began ob- servation from the hut at 0857. Observed 2 hours then examined inside pen, & left at 1125. Sept. 3. Strawberry Canyon Alameda County at Behavin Lab. pen at 0800, weather clear light wind with slight tur- bulence. A black house cat was sitting by the trap outside the pen, and I found two dead immature quail - the top was dislodged & remnants of one quail had been pulled out of the collecting net section. 0840 Wind has increased slightly, turbulence now moderate. Observed penned birds until 0920. Then covered trap outside with chicken wire & blocked exit to keep cats away from trapped birds. Reset and baited trap. Watch con. + 21 min.
