Left the ranch for Berkeley, mileage 44912, about 1115, and arrived at 1730 mileage 45156 after a slow trip with heavy traffic that slowed Nimitz Freeway to occasional stops - left freeway at 98th and found equally bad conditions crossing to Warren Blvd, then clear the rest of the way. Total trip mileage 610 mi. Aug. 31. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County. Checked the Behavior Lab. pen at 1930 and observed praying birds for ten minutes; then placed a can of Pigeon Crumbs and a can of Hen Chow - half of each in separate pie plates, to check both consumption rate and preferences, and half scattered in the ground. Provided another dust bath in C-2. Renewed hose - water hole is full. Sept. 1. Strawberry Canyon, Alameda County. at the Behavior Lab. pen at 1715 - checked trap and released Scrub Jay in it and reset. Observed penned birds from the hut from 1720. Weather clear, light wind with slight tur- bulence. Ended obs. at 1755.
